January Roundup

The devil is in the details. How many times have you heard that phrase in your life? Better question: How many times have you Iived it as a seemingly straightforward initiative spiraled out of control due to unforeseen complications?
We’re closing out January by giving you resources to better manage the complex (and not always obvious) details in a few critical areas of your healthcare or life sciences business so you never have to experience that frustration and disappointment again.

Before we dive in, please reply to this email to let us know if you’re going to the VIVE conference in Miami March 6-9. Three of us—Carrie Nixon, Rebecca Gwilt, and Kaitlyn O’Connor—will be there and we’d love to connect!

Now let’s get to it.

Telehealth and Virtual Care Management remains a hot topic in healthcare, especially with the new Remote Therapeutic Monitoring (RTM) CPT codes and the overall move toward more hybrid or virtual-first care options.

If you’re looking to launch an RTM offering in 2022 or wondering if it makes sense to add a Chronic Care Management (CCM) or Principal Care Management (PCM) service line to your existing revenue model, then you’ll want to invest an hour in this webinar. (Hopefully you caught this live and got to ask questions, but even if you didn’t the information is gold. And you get the chart of codes + reimbursements!)
And if you want an experienced remote monitoring team behind you as you build these new service lines, be sure to check out our Hit the Ground Running with Remote Monitoring and Care Management fixed-fee offer.

(FYI, we tried for a catchier title for that offer and didn’t quite make it. What would you call an offer that helps you close every gap and explore every opportunity when adding a remote monitoring or care management offer to your business model? Reply to this email and let us know what we should have called it!)

Hospitals and health systems received big news this month: The Supreme Court allowed CMS’s Omnibus COVID-19 Health Care Staff Vaccination Interim Final Rule to continue and halted OSHA’s Emergency Temporary Standard.

Senior Counsel Faisal Khan spells it out on the blog: “The Court concluded that ensuring providers take steps to avoid transmitting COVID-19 to their patients is consistent with the fundamental principle of the medical profession: “first, do no harm.” The Court also concluded that it would be the opposite of effective administration for a provider or supplier that is supposed to make people well to make them sick with COVID-19.” Find out more about how this ruling affects your facility here.

If your hospital or health system is considering Hospital at Home—or wondering how such a thing is even possible or profitable—then you’ll want to stay tuned for next month’s edition. We have some surprising and practical information coming your way thanks to our own Casey Papp, Esq., who helped launch this program at NewYork-Presbyterian. In the meantime, please send us your Hospital at Home questions by replying to this email so you can get the answers you need.

Digital Health gets some love on the podcast this month with three insightful interviews. First up is Meghan Gaffney of Veda Data Solutions, who shares how a political entrepreneur and an astrophysicist saw an opportunity for healthcare innovation—and how your IP might have another life, too.

Dr. Vik Bakhru of Circulo Health talks about avoiding algorithmic bias and worsening health inequities in machine learning and AI technologies. You’ll come for that conversation and stay for Medicaid of the Future.

And Claudia Virlanuta of Edlitera explains how digital health companies can recruit and retain top talent during the Great Resignation (and possibly convinces Rebecca to learn Python).

Mark Mansour, Esq., takes to the blog to explain the 510(k) medical device approval pathway for smaller companies or first-time applicants, including preparation tips and timelines.

Startups, don’t miss Springboard's upcoming Dolphin Tank: Digital Health pitch event in partnership with Accenture to elevate Black founders on February 8th, 2022 (virtual 1-2pm ET). Presenting companies will pitch for advice, resources and connections to an expert "Dolphin" panel and receive crowdsourced support from the audience AND be featured by Accenture throughout all of February as part of their celebration of Black History Month.

While we’re not exactly running out of paper here, we are running out of time to publish the January newsletter. That’s the ‘problem’ with our line of work—healthcare innovation means we  never run out of things to talk about and share with you! So we’re drawing the line here for now, with notes already started for next month’s edition.

Thank you for inviting us into your mailbox every month. We get so many replies from readers who find this monthly update both practical and aspirational, and that’s exactly what we’re aiming for.

Until next time,

Carrie, Rebecca
